Roofing Sheathing Connection Tolerances

This document presents guidelines on tolerances for installation of roof sheathing connections. The guidelines are based on results of structural testing on full-scale roof panels under uplift and shear loading. These tolerances will allow for moderate errors in nail placement without compromising the intended strength of the sheathing connection. The implementation of these tolerance limits into installation specifications or quality framing programs will enable builders to establish realistic framing goals and give building officials practical guidance on acceptable levels of deviation in nail installation practices.
