Light-Frame Wood Shear Walls with Various Overturning Restraints
This report addresses several areas of shear wall design with emphasis on the
anchorage, overturning restraints, and bottom plate performance. Innovative
overturning restraints assembled with metal truss plates were designed and
tested to provide an option for accelerated and streamlined on-site assembly of
panelized wall systems. The capacity of traditional holddowns in wall
assemblies was measured and the failure modes were noted. An analytical
methodology for calculating the distribution of uplift forces in conventional
shear wall segments, and a design procedure for seismic analysis of shear walls
with varying degrees of overturning restraint (including an example for a
two-story shear wall) are also presented in this report.
